Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Concert
|Presented By||Center for the Arts|
|When/Where||Wednesday, Jul 01, 2020 12:00pm||Online|
Ladysmith Black Mambazo shares a performance full of moving and intricate rhythms and harmonies of native South African musical traditions. Their music is inspired by isicathamiya, which is a traditional form of music developed in the mines of South Africa. Working to ensure the preservation of musical heritage, Ladysmith Black Mambazo brings you a recently released concert, recorded at University of California, Los Angeles.
In early March, Ladysmith Black Mambazo was en route to the U.S. to resume their tour, then the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak forced them to cancel many performance dates. Except one: Ladysmith Black Mambazo chose to perform an entire concert at the University of California, Los Angeles. On stage before an empty Royce Hall, the group performed to an audience populated with three camera operators, a few staff and a modest crew. Thanks to KCRW—in partnership with the Center for the Art of performance at UCLA—for allowing us to share this intimate concert, bringing the joyful music of South Africa to the world.
