The Earth Day: Arcadia Mixtape will showcase Arcadia as a basis for the creation of other artistic works by collaborating artists presented by Mason Arts at Home.
Arcadia is an environmental public art installation by artist and musician, Sam Nester, Arcadia translates the biorhythms of medicinal and edible plants into music and light. It is accessible 24/7 online via the Mason Arcadia Twitch Livestream, and will be in the President’s Park Hydroponic Greenhouse until December 2021.
For Earth Day: Arcadia Mixtape, a variety of Mason students will perform to or compose original works inspired by the Arcadia Twitch stream. The event features the Mason Steel Pan Ensemble performing a score composed by Victor Provost, Jaelin Mitchell (Sophomore Music Education and Vocal Performance) singing an original song, School of Dance major CC Milbrandt performing a modern dance choreographed by fellow School of Dance student Anna Ticknor, Brianna Camp (BFA School of Art) creating an intuitive painting, and Sarah Sylvan (BFA Creative Writing) reading an original poem.
Arcadia was brought to Mason’s Fairfax Campus by the Murals at Mason Program Coordinator, Yassmin Salem, and University Curator, Don Russell. The vision behind this installation is to provide a unique and innovative virtual environment to connect with nature and art. The music and lights from Arcadia create an immersive meditation experience, and also provide new avenues of research into plant health and environmental sustainability.
