“There are no limits to how we can make, build, and bring dance to the lovers of our art form; the lock is broken, and the lid thrown away.” - Hope Boykin
Through the efforts of HopeBoykinDance, Boykin is a creator, mover, educator and motivator. A highly celebrated performer who recently completed her 20th and final year as a company member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she is the Artistic Lead for the Kennedy Center Dance Lab, and is a highly in demand choreographer. During the pandemic, Boykin has been investigating how the arts community is being redefined, and in a conversation with School of Dance Director Karen Reedy, the concept of this new project was born.
Boykin added, “This work has an underlying theme of running. Running to and toward a ‘better than yesterday’ mentality… our desire to grow no matter the circumstances.”
During the Fall 2020 semester, Hope has worked with Mason’s 38 junior and senior dance majors in the creation of this new work. This guest artist residency has employed “Window Wall” projection technology, bringing Hope virtually into the Mason School of Dance studios, creating movement for her in-person and virtual cast members. The choreography generated was then filmed by the dancers and directed and edited by Boykin. This work will be premiered as a dance film and eventually may be staged for the traditional theater.
Before the film premiere at 6:15 pm, Boykin will be joined by School of Dance Director Karen Reedy, Rehearsal Director and Mason Dance Master of Fine Arts candidate Robert Kleinendorst, along with dance majors Starla Edwards ('22), Johnny Del Jesus ('22) and Hope Spears ('21) for a LIVE conversation hosted on Zoom webinar. Participants will have a chance to ask questions in real time. Registration for the conversation is required.
